Ajaz Patel, A Journey from Mumbai to Cricketing Stardom

Introduction

Born in Mumbai, India on October 21, 1988, Ajaz Yunus Patel is a cricket player from New Zealand. He is a left-arm seam bowler for Central Districts but has converted to a slow left-arm orthodox spinner. In October 2018, Patel made his Test debut, collecting five wickets in his second innings, following making his debut for New Zealand in international cricket. He joined Jim Laker and Anil Kumble as the third bowler in Test history to capture all ten wickets in an innings in December 2021, but New Zealand lost the match.

Domestic career

In the Ford Trophy on December 27, 2015, Patel made his List A debut. He went on to win the Plunket Shield two seasons in a row, collecting 43 wickets in 2015–16 and 44 in 2016–17. After concluding the 2017–18 season with 48 wickets, he was voted Men's Domestic Player of the Year in April 2018. He signed a contract with Central Districts for the 2018–19 season in June 2018. He joined Glamorgan for the County Championship in July 2022 and claimed 14 wickets in four games.

International career

Patel was chosen for the New Zealand Test team to play Pakistan in July 2018. During the same series, on October 31, 2018, he made his T20I debut. He was later included in the ODI team, despite not playing. On November 16, 2018, Patel made his Test debut, collecting five wickets and winning Man of the Match in a close victory. He was included in the New Zealand ODI team for their tour of Pakistan in August 2021.

India 2021, Ten wickets

Patel was added to the New Zealand Test team for a series in India in November 2021. He scored 2/90 and 1/60 in the opening Test, and the game ended in a tie. He created history in the second Test match when he finished with figures of 10/119 after taking all ten wickets in the opening innings. With this feat, he became the third bowler in Test history to take all ten wickets in an innings. He finished the match with the best bowling numbers against India, 14/225, after taking four more wickets in the second innings.

2023

Patel was chosen for New Zealand's Test series against Bangladesh in November 2023. He claimed six wickets in the first Test and eight wickets in both innings of the second Test.
