India's top tennis player Sumit Nagal fought valiantly but fell short in his debut Wimbledon main draw appearance. Nagal, who qualified for the Olympics last month, faced off against Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia in the first round.
Despite flashes of brilliance, Nagal couldn't overcome inconsistency on grass, his weakest surface. The match went down to four sets, with Kecmanovic ultimately winning 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6.
Though disappointed with the loss, Nagal's performance is a positive sign for Indian tennis. Ranked No. 1 in India and with a career-high ranking of 71st globally, Nagal is a rising star to watch.
