Brave Enhances Bitcoin Support and Announces Wallet Expansion Plans

Mar 07 Tech Standard

Brave, a popular privacy-focused web browser, recently rolled out an update for its desktop version (1.63). This update brings exciting news for Bitcoin users – the integration of Native SegWit Bitcoin wallets into the built-in Brave Wallet. This addition allows users to benefit from lower transaction fees and improved error detection compared to other Bitcoin wallet types.

Furthermore, Brave Wallet now boasts broader compatibility by supporting various Bitcoin address formats, including Legacy, Nested SegWit, Native SegWit, and Taproot, ensuring seamless interaction with third-party wallets. This move coincides with the growing adoption of Bitcoin by institutional investors, evidenced by the recent approval of multiple Bitcoin ETFs in the US.

Beyond its function as a peer-to-peer payment system, Bitcoin is solidifying its position as a robust asset class and a foundation for emerging technologies like NFTs and DeFi. Recognizing this evolution, Brave has expressed plans to further enhance Brave Wallet with additional privacy features. Additionally, the company aims to introduce support for storing BRC-20 and Ordinals tokens within the wallet. These functionalities are anticipated to be available across all desktop and mobile versions of the browser later in 2024.
