MANILA - India has pledged its support to the Philippines in upholding its sovereignty, while both nations seek new areas of cooperation, including defense and security, according to a statement released on Tuesday.
Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, India's foreign minister, made the remarks during a press conference in Manila. His Philippine counterpart, Enrique Manalo, revealed that the two countries are exploring ways to ensure a free and peaceful Indo-Pacific region.
This development comes amidst rising tensions in the South China Sea, where China has been accused of militarizing disputed islands. Both India and the Philippines have territorial claims in the resource-rich region.
