Experience reigns supreme in Australia's test squad, but are they past their peak? Not according to veteran bowler Nathan Lyon. Despite acknowledging the team is "closer to the end than the start" of their careers, Lyon believes the core group can extend their reign for another three to five years. This comes after Australia's convincing 2-0 test series victory over New Zealand.
The age factor is undeniable. David Warner's recent retirement at 37 marked a significant departure, but Lyon expects the key players to stay on for the upcoming Ashes series against England in 2025-26. Bowlers like Lyon (36), Josh Hazlewood (33), Scott Boland (34), and Mitchell Starc (34) bring a wealth of experience to the table.
However, Lyon emphasizes unwavering dedication to fitness and recovery as the key to extending their careers. "We've done the hard work," he says, "and there's no reason why we can't keep playing." He also credits captain Pat Cummins' management of the bowling attack as another critical factor. Cummins' understanding of workload and bowler fatigue helps maintain peak performance and minimizes injuries among the veterans.
While age might bring limitations, Lyon is confident in the team's talent and experience. "The guys have played long enough now and they know what to do," he says. Australia's veteran core seems determined to extend their success for years to come, with a strong focus on fitness and smart management playing a vital role.
