Birthright No More, Trump's Push to End Automatic U.S. Citizenship

END OF AUTOMATIC CITIZENSIP

Ending birthright citizenship has been on Trump’s radar for years. In future, children born in the U.S, but with neither parent being a U.S national or a permanent resident of the country, could be at risk of not being eligible for automatic citizenship. The incoming President Donald Trump, were to sign an executive order.

U.S Citizenship has been the ultimate goal for most immigrants living in U.S, the traditional way of getting one's citizenship is by applying for naturalization after waiting five years of being permanent resident or a green card holder. Even if the child is illegitimate the basic rule would still apply. The Child Citizenship Act of 2000 made the child who is below 18 years old an automatic citizen if one of his parent's naturalizes. The child's citizenship is granted by operation of law.

ACUISITION 

A child gains citizenship automatically if they were born under two married citizens who lives in U.S, or any one of the parent has a U.S residence. If only one parent was a U.S citizen, that parent must have resided in the U.S for five years before the child's birth.  Even if the child is born outside U.S he/she may still be an automatic citizen of U.S.
